The planned amalgamation on one site of Taunton Juinior Boys with their counterparts Weirfield Girls School was well advanced before the idea of a swimming pool was introduced to the design brief. In fact the works were tendered whilst the purpose built pool was considered and designed.
Using computer facilities it was possible to quickly determine the options available. Due to site restraints and economics it was decided to locate the pool beneath the proposed sports hall building and to amend the associated changing rooms forming part of the tender package. By the time tenders were returned the design concept had been agreed and the relevant working drawings altered to permit a building start on program.
During the course of construction the decision was taken to extend the pool to a full 25m by omitting the cricket pavillion. Again minimal building delay was suffered because of the short response time made possible by C.A.D. drawing systems.
The pool is purpose designed and was formed using in-situ concrete by the main contractor. Warm air is supplied via floor ducting and grilles around the pool and air is extracted over the pool centre by exposed ducts set between the structural beams.
